1972 Triumph GT6 MkIII in Triumph White with Black interior, Manual. Rotoflex rear suspension model. The Triumph GT6 production ran from 1966 to 1973. In early 1963 Giovanni Michelotti was commissioned by Standard-Triumph to design a GT version of their recently introduced Spitfire 4, also designed by Michelotti. An unmodified Spitfire 4 was delivered to Michelotti's design studios in Italy and late in 1963 the prototype Spitfire GT4 was returned to England for evaluation. The styling of the vehicle was a success but the extra weight of the GT bodyshell resulted in extremely poor performance from the Spitfire's 1,147 cc power unit, and plans for producing the Spitfire GT4 were shelved. To overcome the lack of performance inherent in the heavier body style the Spitfire's 4-cylinder engine was replaced with the more powerful 1998 cc 6-cylinder engine from the Triumph Vitesse. The car was further developed and refined and eventually launched as the Triumph GT6. The Mark 3 Triumph GT6 was the last of the derivatives. Around 13,000 cars were produced until December 1973.
This Gt6 presents very well and the history file shows the engine was fully rebuilt in July 2015 by Billcar Engineering Ltd, and the carbs were rebuilt later that year. The invoices are in the document file (£3,333.06 engine rebuild and £505 carb refurb). The head bolts and tappets were correctly reset after the ‘running in’ period, and the car has only covered about 2,000 miles since then. Upon test drive this GT6 drove with a very smooth engine with plenty of power and a great exhaust note. We have put this through a garage and have an invoice on file for £1000 to ensure this car runs and drives as she should and now has an MOT till February 2023 with no advisories. The car history file has a workshop manual, parts handbook, numerous invoices, old tax discs and the V5 showing just 5 previous keepers. On the road, these GT6s are so smooth and easy, belying their 50 years and are very useable keeping up with modern traffic. Absolutely any inspection welcome. Please call us for any more information.
