JAGUAR S-TYPE

Saloon 3.8 MANUAL OVERDRIVE (1966)

1966 Jaguar S-Type 3.8 Manual/ Overdrive in Regency Red with red leather interior.
The S-Type Jaguar: the thinking man’s Mk2. Everything the Mk2 has and better handling to boot. And a much bigger boot too. Not as pert as the Mk2, perhaps, but a superior car in all respects.
Launched in 1963, the S-Type was designed to plug the gap between the smooth riding and ultra-luxurious MkX and the rather antiquated live axle Mk2. Sharing the MkX’s independent rear suspension, the S-Type was a far more sophisticated car than the Mk2, the improved ride/handling being complemented by power steering as standard and a more lavishly equipped interior.
The S-Type came with either a 3.4 or 3.8-litre XK engine, featuring a modified version of the Mk2 bodyshell with restyled front and rear ends. The front had its own distinctive grille, shrouded headlamps and a slim-line bumper while the rear looked very similar to the large MkX. The end result was a fine luxury sports saloon that outpaced the Mk2 it was based on. Production ceased in 1968 when the superlative XJ6 arrived by which time almost 25,000 S-Types had been sold, of which 15,000 had the 3.8 engine.
This stunning S-Type 3.8 manual overdrive was first registered to James May in May 1966 and passed down to his son in 1995. One of just 9,717 such examples and, with the manual/overdrive gearbox, the most desirable S-Type configuration. This matching-numbers car suits its Regency Red paintwork, working well in combination with its wonderfully original red leather interior. One of most well-preserved interiors we’ve seen in a Jaguar saloon of this era, it's a splendid space to occupy, benefiting from newer carpets fitted some time ago. During the latter period of Mr May’s original ownership, we understand that the car was taken off the road and stored in a properly prepared garage for many years, being regularly run-up and cared for; its last MOT Certificate in 2003 shows a mileage of 35,129 miles (which is now just 35,400) with the car's overall condition suggesting this mileage is genuine. The car has had some light recommissioning to ensure the car runs and drive as she should with a strong engine, smooth gearbox and working overdrive and has good oil pressure. The car is a lovely solid example of an S type with a V5, heritage certificate and a few recent invoices. This car would look stunning in any collection and is ready to be used and cherished. Absolutely any inspection is welcome. Viewing is highly recommended, and we know you won't be disappointed. All major debit cards accepted. Please contact us for any further information.
