1987 FORD SIERRA COSWORTH RS500 IN MOONSTONE BLUE
Disappointingly slow sales of the distinctively shaped Ford Sierra after its introduction in 1982, suggested that a serious marketing boost was required, and it was the obvious choice to become the platform for Ford's new competition aspirations. It was rear-wheel drive, had good aerodynamics, albeit being prone to lift at high speeds and it was available as a three-door. A wind-tunnel developed body kit and rear spoiler would sort out the lift issues but, more importantly, Ford still needed to build 5,000 units for motorsport homologation, somewhat worrying when Stuart Turner's initial approach to the dealer network came back with an estimate that indicated that they could sell around 1,500 units! The successful eventual sales record is of course history. Ford went on to sell 5,545 three-door cars including the RS500, of which only 500 were built, and the Cosworth engine also found its way into nearly 30,000 Ford Sierra Saloons (Cosworth 3dr, Sapphire 2wd, and 4wd). The Sierra Cosworth comfortably exceeded Ford's best expectations and it went on to become one of the most successful 'Touring Car' racers of all time, winning races all over the world. This, very special, 1987 RS500 (No 484) has covered just 25,769 miles as it has been kept in dry storage since 1992. The car was initially supplied new to it’s first keeper a Mr David Robert King who acquired the car on 2nd September 1987, he then sold this on to its next owner who acquired the vehicle on 18th May 1988 who the proceeded to use the vehicle for the next couple of years until putting the car into dry storage for personal reasons in 1992. During the previous owners tenure the car was MOT’d on 1st September 1990 with a recorded mileage of 24,024. The next MOT took place on 17th September 1991 with a recorded mileage of 25,388. Due to a change in personal circumstances the owner then decided to put the car into dry storage where it has remained untouched, we haven’t even cleaned the car as want to keep it in its exact condition. This car will need recommissioning as it has not been used for 18 years, the previous owner did have a quote from a specialist which I have on file from September 2016 for this to be done which was for £1000 but we advise that you should get a quote for this yourselves from a specialist. The car will need a new timing belt, new battery, flush out and re-fill of all fluids etc to get this rare Moonstone blue RS500 back on the road to be enjoyed. The spare wheel having never been used still showing its original manufacturing marks. The interior is in excellent condition. The dashboard and door cards are unmarked and the seatbelts with vibrant red push buttons have not faded. The boot appears to hardly have been used. There is a car key (for all doors, tailgate and ignition) together with a Cobra remote control in the car ignition / steering lock. The original wheelcaps are being collected in the next couple of weeks along with the original paperwork all of which we have photocopies of to show interested buyers. Fast Fords especially Sierra Cosworth RS500s in the rarest colour of Moonstone Blue are becomingly increasingly sought after and are the fast appreciating classics in the current market.
